Ronald Lee Cornetet's Obituary
Mr. Ronald Lee Cornetet, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, following a three-month battle with cancer. Ron was born in Grand Rapids on March 27, 1939, to Leslie and Ruth (Longley) Cornetet. He attended Ottawa Hills High School before marrying the love of his life, the former Julie Ann Neuman, on April 11, 1959. Together, they began a journey that would span 66 wonderful years, until Julie’s passing in January of this year. When Julie was diagnosed with dementia, Ron devoted himself to her care as her primary caregiver. His constant love and admiration for her were unmatched. Over the decades, they created countless memories as a couple and as a family, especially at their beloved cottage on Spring Lake, which became their permanent home in 2000. Their children and grandchildren often say it is the greatest love story they’ve ever known. The example set by their parents and grandparents has shaped their belief in what true partnership looks like, raising the standard for what love and marriage can be.
Ron’s strong sense of character and dedication began early, as he earned the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout during his time in the Boy Scouts. After completing his associate degree, he joined his father-in-law at F.R. Neuman Company, where they worked side by side. Ron started and built the Property/Casualty line of the business, eventually assuming ownership of the insurance agency. A devoted, longtime member of East Congregational Church, Ron had a great appreciation for music, especially the organ. He was part of the music program, singing in the choirs from a very young age until just a few years ago, and he built many cherished, lasting friendships within his church community. Over the years, he held memberships at The Peninsular Club, East Hills Tennis Club, Spring Lake Country Club, and High Point Country Club in Naples, Florida. One of his most cherished men’s clubs was his monthly coffee group.
Ron found joy in life’s simple pleasures - walking through the woods with Julie and their beloved dog, Boston, often accompanied by family and the “grand dogs.” He had a deep love for animals, and they brought him so much happiness. He even made sure the squirrels were taken care of, filling their bowl with nuts every day. Ron found great peace in life’s quiet moments, like sitting on his deck watching the eagles’ nest in the yard, taking in sunsets over Spring Lake, and sharing boat rides with family and friends. He also had a great appreciation for well-made furniture and, from time to time, would add a new piece to the home without Julie noticing.
Ron was a selfless man who always put others first, always seeking to bring joy to those around him. He was a great listener and everyone’s biggest cheerleader. He took delight in supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their many sporting events and activities, come rain or shine. Family always came first for Ron. For many years, Ron and Julie treasured winters at their home in Naples, Florida, creating lasting memories surrounded by friends, sunshine, and the warmth of community. He will be greatly missed by his three children, Jeff (Ruthie) Cornetet, Christy (Ron Mooney) Kishman, and Jennifer (Edward) McCombs; eight grandchildren, Molly (Tim) Milewski, Bryan (Erica) Kishman, Megan (Caleb) Deaton, Chad Kishman, Kyle Cornetet, Tyler Cornetet, Caitlin McCombs, and Kennedy McCombs; five great-grandchildren, Morgan, Mason, Kayden, Jack, and Aubrey; great-great-grandson, Oaklen; brother, Alan Cornetet; brother-in-law, Robert (Jan) Neuman; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie; parents; brother, Dale Cornetet; sisters-in-law, Betsy Muste, Karen Fessel and Ruthann Cornetet; brother-in-law, Gerald Muste and nephew, Harley Muste. A PRIVATE FAMILY SERVICE will be held at Klise Chapel at East Congregational Church. A public CELEBRATION OF LIFE honoring both Julie and Ron will be held from 3:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the Spring Lake Country Club (17496 N. Fruitport Road, Spring Lake, MI 49456).
