Ronald James “Ron” Topping, age 72, found eternal peace surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at The Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence. He was born June 24, 1952 to Donald and Margaret (Nelson) Topping in Ludington, Michigan. Ron graduated from Muskegon High School in 1970 and spent his career in management with Canteen Services before retiring after 38 years.
Ron found his greatest joy in simply spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was humble, kind, gentle, and genuine; his signature rosy cheeks and warm smile made him everyone’s friend. Through the years he enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, birdwatching, and ship watching, and he would spend hours in his workshop crafting treasured woodworking pieces. Ron loved traveling with his family to air shows and marching band competitions and attended every possible event involving his kids and grandkids. He found immeasurable happiness through the lens of his camera and was well-known for capturing beautiful sunrise and sunset images. He looked forward to sharing his passion each day with his many Facebook friends and followers, and his photos were often featured by local weather reporters.
Ron will be dearly missed by the love of his life Diane, and their children, Kate (Joe) Munson and Marc (Missy) Topping; beloved grandchildren, McKenna (Erich), Curtis, Sam, Stella and Jack; brothers, Rick (Cindy) Topping and Scott Shelkey; sisters, Chris (Russ) Gilbert and Judy (Jim) La Plante, and many special siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, bonus mother Violet, and brother Marc.
A celebration of Ron’s life will take place at a later date. Kindly consider a memorial contribution in his honor to The Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence in lieu of flowers.
Ron’s family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. In keeping his memory alive, always remember to chase the sunrises and sunsets.
