Roy Lorns Shields' Obituary
Roy Lorns Shields Jr., age 74, of Grand Haven passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014. He was born to Elizabeth (Van Lopik) and Roy Lorns Shields on July 28, 1940 in Grand Haven, Michigan. He graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1958. He was active in Boy Scouts for over 50 years, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and receiving the Silver Beaver Award and the Medal of Merit during his scouting years.
He attended Muskegon Community College and received his AA, his BS degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University, and his MA in Education from Western Michigan University. During his college years he worked for the Ottawa County Sheriff's Dept.
He married Karen Olson on August 8, 1964. He joined the Oakland Police Dept. of Oakland, California and retired in 1969 due to an on-duty back injury. Returning to Grand Haven in 1970, he coordinated and instructed the Criminal Justice program at Muskegon Community College for thirty years, retiring in 2000.
He was active in security work and training as a member of American Society for Industrial Security, and served as past chairman of the Michigan Criminal Justice Educator's Association. Roy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served on various boards. He also enjoyed flying, fishing, hunting, and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Carl and Melissa (Gordon) Shields of Lexington, Kentucky; daughter, Kristin (Shields) and CB Long of Grand Haven; grandchildren, Jason, Maggie, and Molly Long and Alexander Shields; sister, Kathryn Christner of Jenison; and brother-in-law, Carl and Kathy Olson of Muskegon.
Funeral services for Roy will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 1, 2014 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Dieter Haupt officiating. Visitation will be held 1-3 and 7-9 PM Friday, October 31, 2014 at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home of Grand Haven. Interment will take place in Lake Forest Cemetery.
