Royce D. "Roy" VanderScheer's Obituary
Royce D. “Roy” VanderScheer, age 92, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Seminole Shores Living Center. He was born July 15, 1929 in Grand Rapids, MI to Ralph and Sadie (Alberda) VanderScheer and lived most of his life in the Muskegon area. Roy received his Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served during the Korean War. Roy worked over 30 years at Mona Shores Public Schools and retired in 1990 after having served as the Director of Elementary Education, Director of Curriculum and Principal of Campbell Elementary. Roy was well-respected within the Mona Shores school community and also was the first president of the Norton Shores Library. Though he was an all-star athlete in baseball, football, and basketball during his high school years, tennis became his sport of choice which he played throughout his life until his mid 80’s. He was also a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers baseball team. On July 21, 1971, he married Sheila Sattory who preceded him in death on December 7, 2011. Roy and Sheila enjoyed traveling during their retirement years to places like China, Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. Roy also enjoyed traveling the country with friends in search of Civil War Battlefields and historical markers to read. He lived a very good life of integrity, personal accomplishment, and mentorship to many over the years and his humor, intelligence and kindness will be sorely missed. Survivors include 4 children, Ross VanderScheer, Jody Whitehead, Kurt (Jennifer McKean) VanderScheer, Jill (Matthew) Kanowith; 5 grandchildren, Alex (Erin) VanderScheer, AnnaBelle and EanJoseph VanderScheer, Benjamin and Jonah Kanowith; 2 great-grandchildren, Laila Rouleau and Alistair VanderScheer; and 1 sister, Elaine Borgman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila C. VanderScheer; 1 granddaughter, Megan VanderScheer; his parents; and 1 brother, Gary VanderScheer. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, July 9, 2022 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey Street, Norton Shores, MI 49444 with Pastor Jerry Hagans officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the AgeWell Services – Meals on Wheels Program or the Alzheimer’s Association.
