Ruby Werschem's Obituary
Ruby Werschem, age 75, of Spring Lake died at her home, surrounded by her family, on June 17, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Ruby was born on February 10, 1945, in White Lake, NC, to Noah and Mary (Russ) Jernigan. Ruby never met a stranger, always thought of others before herself and had a strong, never wavering faith. After high school, she attended business school in Wilmington, NC. After graduating from business school, she moved to Washington, DC. It was in DC that she met the love of her life, Harold Werschem, Jr. who was in the Air Force. They married in August 1967 and shortly thereafter, moved to Spring Lake. Ruby worked at several area businesses including Boomer’s Cleaners and Medallion.
She is survived by her husband of almost 53 years, Harold; her daughter, Cindy (Rick) Bowden and two grandchildren who were the lights of her life, Matthew and Megan. Also surviving Ruby are two sisters, Nell (Chris) Grimley of Virginia and Doris (Emil) Stachowski of Wisconsin; brother, Robert (Paek) Jernigan of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Lorrie Werschem of New Mexico; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Mary Jernigan; three brothers: Harry, Larry, and Wayne Jernigan; her son, Michael Werschem; her niece, Deborah Grimley; and her brother-in-law, Edward Werschem.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Ferrysburg Community Church - 17785 Mohawk Drive in Spring Lake. Attendees are asked to dress casually and to please wear a mask in the Church.
