Scott Joseph Benkert's Obituary
Scott Joseph Benkert, age 52, of Spring Lake passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2020, at home after a short battle with cancer. He was born December 20, 1967, in Grand Haven, to Donald and Patricia (Donner) Benkert, and married Julie Dawn Wilke on December 19, 2003.
Scott served his country in the Navy and worked at Bos Construction as a trim carpenter. He loved camping, kayaking, gardening, building, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends. Scott was well known for being in charge of the Mystery Creek Halloween Festivities.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Julie Benkert; daughter, Samantha (Daniel Thompson) Benkert; son, Steven (Ashley) Benkert; two step-children, Amanda and Brent Nelson; four grandchildren: Brooklyn VanDyke, Braylyn Nelson, Max Kniat and Bentley Wiseman; mother-in-law, Janice Wilke; two sisters, Loretta Downer and Diane Kooi; four brothers: Paul Benkert, Bruce (Maria) Benkert, Brad (Sue) Benkert and Andy (Anne) Benkert; sisters-in-law, Dee Langlois and Deb (Gary) Faucher; brother-in-law, Don (Nora) Wilke; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Shawn Ordaz-Benkert, three sisters: Shelly, Sally, and Janice Marie Benkert, two brothers, John Anthony and Lawrence Robert Benkert, his father-in-law, Ron Wilke, sister-in-law, Amy Wilke-Huizenga.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Scott will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. David Gross as celebrant. Friends may meet the family from 5-7 p.m. Monday, September 21, at The Spring Lake Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 213 E. Savidge St, Spring Lake, MI 49456 and one hour prior to the mass at church. Interment will be in Holton - Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials to Harbor Hospice are appreciated.
