Scott Donald Crider's Obituary
Scott Donald Crider, age 55, passed away January 12, 2024, at the home of his parents, Don and Nancy. Scott started school at age 4 and graduated from Wesley School in 1995. During his years at Wesley School, Scott had excellent teachers and enjoyed great programs like OJT (on-the-job training).
In 1980, The Muskegon Area Intermediate School District chose Scott as their poster child for their millage and bond campaign. A slide presentation featuring Scott was part of their campaign presentation and there was also a photo and article in the Muskegon Chronicle. Scott was also a volunteer at the Muskegon Y for many years. He was employed at Taco Bell, on Apple Ave., where he worked as a dishwasher for over 20 years, until he retired during the COVID outbreak.
In May of 2001, Scott moved into Joseph’s House, where he lived with 5 other residents and the staff and his housemates became his extended family. While living at Joseph’s House, he participated in programs at MOKA until COVID, at which time he loved attending DayBreak.
One of his favorite summer activities was tubing at the home of his aunt and uncle. He enjoyed vacations with his family and loved motels with pools and hot tubs! Scott was a big Star Wars fan and knew the dialogue, saying it before the actors did! No matter how many times he watched the Home Alone movies, he would burst into laughter at the funny antics. He had many movies and favorite old TV shows downloaded to his Kindle that he enjoyed watching repeatedly, often reciting the dialogue.
Scott participated in many Special Olympics events: track and field, softball, swimming, volleyball, basketball, cross country skiing and poly hockey were all favorites. More recently, he enjoyed playing bocce ball. In 1992, Scott was a Michigan Special Olympics representative during the Showcase’s award ceremony at the Frauenthal Theater. The following year, Scott was the Michigan Special Olympics poster star for their 25th year celebration. He was also featured in a Sunday Muskegon Chronicle article with a photo showing him holding the celebration poster. His teacher, Peg Hall, was quoted as saying, “I’ve had him in class for a long time and Scott is one who really works hard at whatever he does and always is smiling, happy and a bubbly person.”
Scott’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teachers at Laketon Bethel Reformed Church were influential in his faith. That continued when, as a resident of Joseph’s House, he attended Forest Park Covenant Church. If he knew you were sick, he would say with sincerity, “I pray for you.” Now, Scott is in Heaven.
Scott loved, and was loved by, so many people. He was always such a good helper and gave the best bear hugs ever! He loved being independent, often saying, “I do it myself!” In addition to his parents, Scott is survived by his siblings, Jim (Jamie to family) and his wife Jenn in Vancouver, WA, Susan in Mars Hill, NC, and Michael in Redmond, WA; nieces Makaia, Kayanna, and Sarah and his nephew, Logan.
No service will be held. In honor of Scott, MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be directed to CANMI (Covenant Ability Network of Michigan), Harbor Hospice of Muskegon or Laketon Bethel Church.
