Scott Shuman's Obituary
Scott Shuman, age 62, of Spring Lake passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at his home. He was born on November 8, 1946 to Edward F. and Georgianna (Kossuth) Shuman in Honolulu, Hawaii. He married Shirley Damhoff on December 27, 1969 in Grand Haven.
Scott graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1965 as president of his class. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1969 and was commissioned in the US Navy in 1970. Scott flew as a fighter pilot for 21 years and achieved almost 1,000 carrier landings. During his years of service, Scott served as department head in various squadrons, and later became commanding officer of fighter squadron VF-41. He finished his Naval career as mini-boss on the USS Midway, and retired at the rank of commander in 1991. He began a second career flying for American Airlines, based at Miami International Airport and retired in 2005 after 16 years of employment. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Grand Haven and the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28. Scott was an avid sportsman and enjoyed diving, fishing, boating and skiing. He traveled extensively, and loved cooking and entertaining friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; 3 sons: Christopher Shuman of Spring Lake, Michael Shuman of Tavernier, FL, and Gregory Shuman of Spring Lake; 1 granddaughter, Chloe of Reston, VA; his mother, Georgianna of Harbor Springs; 1 brother, Steven (Marsey) Shuman of Petoskey, MI; mother-in-law, Ann (Marv) Satter of Grand Haven; sister-in-law, Henni (Bruce) Campbell of Spring Lake; 2 aunts, Pauline (John) Przysucha of Venice, FL, and Betty (Roy) Nichols of Seminole, FL; 1 uncle, Ed (Elaine) Kossuth of Spring Lake; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward.
The Funeral Mass for Scott will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2009, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. William Langlois as celebrant. Friends may meet the family Wednesday, June 10, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28.
