Sherman Lyn Bates' Obituary
Mr. Sherman Lyn Bates, age 71, passed away at his home in Whitehall on Saturday, June 3, 2017. He was born in Muskegon on June 12, 1945 to Arthur and Leota (Lake) Bates. Sherman was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. He had worked for Campbell Wyant and Cannon for 18 years before working for the State of Michigan as a corrections officer at Brooks Correctional Facility, where he retired in 2000. Sherman was a member of the NRA and enjoyed guns and old cars. On December 23, 1965, Sherman married the former Joyce Cole and she survives him along with two grandchildren, Summer Renee Bates and Skylar Michelle Gray; one sister, Sherry Tobin; two sisters-in-law, Eilene Spink and June Dean; four brothers-in-law, Carl (Rose) Cole, Lyle (Linda) Cole, Laurin (Jan) Cole and David Cole and his best friend, Frank Elliot. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joy Bates Gray, his parents, one brother and one sister. According to Sherman’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
