Shirley A. Bruining's Obituary
Shirley Ann (Ferm) Bruining, went peacefully, to be with the lord on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Shirley was born in Iron Mountain, MI on March 12, 1926, to Willard and Edith (Krooks) Ferm. She attended Marquette High School, Muskegon Ht’s High School, and Hackley School of Nursing. On May 28, 1949 Shirley married Gerald Bruining, they raised four children. Shirley was a registered nurse and worked at Lakey Foundry, Sparta Hospital, Hackley Hospital, and for Dr’s Harryman and Jesson. She volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She loved to sing, was active with Civic Opera and Port City Playhouse and the Mona Shores Choir Assn. She sang in the high school choir and was a member of Central Methodist Church Choir since 1949. She also played cello in high school and in the West Shore Symphony Orchestra in the late 1940’s. She was also active in several church organizations. As a loving wife she is survived by her wonderful husband, Gerald Bruining, of 61 years. She is survived by her children, Tom Bruining of Muskegon, MI, Steve (Karen) Bruining of Spring Lake, MI, Dan (Kersti) Bruining of Suttons Bay, MI, and Ann (Ray) Martinez of Fruitport, MI, ten grandchildren Nicole, Ron, Bobby, Stephanie, Patrick, Rein, Ella, Ray J, Tommy and Crystal. Shirley is also survived by a Sister in Law Carrie Ferm and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Edith Ferm, step mother Gladys Ferm, brothers William Ferm, Martin Ferm, and sister Ruth Keilh. FUNERAL SERVICE will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Central United Methodist Church (1011 2nd St). VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 and 7-9 PM Tuesday at The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 In lieu of flowers please consider the choir fund of Central United Methodist Church or Harbor Hospice.
