Simon "Sam" Workman's Obituary
Mr. Simon “Sam’ Workman, age 92, passed away Sunday evening, June 6, 2004, at a local nursing home. Sam was born July 29, 1909 to Jacob and Nellie (Boukamp) Workman, in Muskegon. He was a lifelong resident of the Muskegon area. He started his career at March Irrigation and had been employed for many years as a machinist at Bennett Pump, prior to his retirement. On June 14, 1935 Simon married Emma DeWitt, and she passed away on June 14, 1988. On August 6, 1989, he married Heressa South, and she passed away May 31, 2004. Sam was a long time member of Covenant Community Church, where he was active in the church council and in the church choir for many, many years. He was active in the “Meals on Wheels” program and volunteered his time to Hospice of Muskegon-Oceana. He received the Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 1991. Simon is survived by 1 sister, Elizabeth Winegar of Grand Haven and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Nettie Bartels, Ann White, Jennie March, Katherine Davis, and 2 brothers, John and William Workman. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Covenant Community Church (134 E. Barney) with Rev. Leigh Van Kampen and Rev. Dennis De Witt co- officiating. Visitation with the family will be 1 hour prior to the service (1-2 PM Saturday). Interment will be at Mona View Cemetery.
