Sophie Ann Emmons' Obituary
Mrs. Sophie Ann Emmons, age 91, passed away Friday morning, January 21, 2011 at Sanctuary at the Oaks. Ann was born November 29, 1919 to Frank Louis and Mary (Chiha) Buway in Grand Rapids. On March 8, 1937 she married Elmer Emmons in Muskegon and he preceded her in death in 2004. Ann had worked at American Coil Spring as a coiler operator for 30 years prior to her retirement in 1979. She loved fishing, crocheting, knitting, sewing, and family outings. She enjoyed attending the musical and sporting events of her children and grandchildren. Her goal was to see all her children and grandchildren graduate from college. Ann was a long time member of both St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Vincent Catholic Church in Pentwater, where she had been active in both of their Altar Societies. Ann was currently a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Ravenna. Her survivors include her children, Elmer E. (Oljie) Emmons, Jr. of Hampton, VA, Dennis L. (Susan) Emmons of North Muskegon and Marsha K. (Gerald) Walter of Ravenna; 9 grandchildren, David (Theresa) Emmons, Shelly (Chris) Kim, Mindi (William) Mackey, Deanna (Robert) Courter, Kimberly (Ted) Brayton, Julie Puntenney, Rebecca (Kevin) Kilbourne, Mary Ellen (Fred) Rosel, and Elizabeth (Jeff) Solem; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; 4 sisters, Bernice Mansfield, Mary Jane Gilbert, Joanne Verburg and Barbara Traxinger; and many nieces and nephews. Ann was also preceded in death by her parents; 5 sisters, Catherine Askins, Victoria Fitzgerald, Annie Abrams, Frances Simmons and Rosie Rollenhagen; and 1 brother, Louis Frank Buway. THE MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 29, 2011 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 12236 Hts. Ravenna Rd, with Rev. Phillip Shangraw as celebrant. Burial will be in Ravenna Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 2-4 & 6-8 PM Friday at The Sytsema Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue 231 726-5210 with the ROSARY being prayed at 6 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine’s Altar Society or Harbor Hospice.
