Steven P. Scholten's Obituary
Steven Paul Scholten, age 75, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Monday, March 18, 2024. Steve was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on July 27, 1948, to Henry and Eleanor (Stevens) Scholten. In June 1970, Steve married his high school sweetheart, the former Barbara Herrema. Barb, along with their children; Corrie (Gerry) Witherell, and Sarah Scholten, and four grandchildren; Max and Kate Witherell, and Nick and Lucas Bruhn, will lovingly remember Steve and miss him greatly. Steve was an avid Michigan State fan, where he graduated with both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees & was a member of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity. Steve began his career in education as a math teacher at Union High School, moving to an assistant principal role at Rockford High School, and finishing his career as the principal at Allendale High School. Retirement from the public schools opened another chapter in Steve’s life: working part-time as an adjunct professor at GRCC, for the MHSAA - OK Conference, and volunteering at the Muskegon Rescue Mission. He most recently served as the president of his Condo board association. Steve thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people & developed many special friendships along his life journey. Steve also enjoyed playing tennis and golf, traveling with Barb across Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the US. Most importantly, he was an incredible Grandpa & cultivated close relationships with each of his grandchildren, from extreme croquet and epic card games of Wizard and Old Maid at the cottage, to countless hours attending their activities, to one-on-one time enjoying ice cream, lunch, a special trip, or just a talk. Steve’s grandchildren all knew how much he loved them. Steve is survived by his loving wife, daughters, son-in-law, grandchildren; brothers David (Jan) Scholten and Kevin (Judy) Scholten; siblings-in-law: Carol (Jim) Euker, Gordon (Marcia) Herrema Jr., Mary (Chuck) Worst, Gayle (Jeff) Raymer; and many special cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Eleanor Scholten; parents-in-law: Gordon Sr. and June Herrema; and brother-in-law, Bill Kuiper. A memorial service will be held for Steve at 11:00 am on Friday, May 17, 2024, at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444, with visitation taking place one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the Muskegon Rescue Mission or the Harbor Hospice Foundation.
