Susan R. Carlson's Obituary
Susan Ruth Carlson, age 62, of Muskegon passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Hackley Hospital. She was born January 27, 1953 to Rev. James H. Smith and Mildred Ruth Smith (Baker) in Newark, New Jersey. Susan moved to the Muskegon area when she was 18 months old and she resided there for the most of her life. She graduated from Muskegon High School in 1971, from Hackley School of Nursing in 1975 as an RN, Ferris State University with her BSN in 1989, Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 1995 for her certification in wound, ostomy and continence. Susan worked for Hackley Hospital as an RN for 14 years then Hackley Visiting Nurses for 19 years. She loved her career, her patients and was a true patient advocate. Susan loved her family, to travel and needlepoint. She belonged to the Viking Linne Lodge #57 IOV. Susan is survived by her daughter, Melissa (Jason) Owen; son, Erik (Lisa) Carlson; grandchildren, Martha Owen, Audrey Owen and Jake Nanna. A VISITATION for Susan will be held at The Walburn Chapel, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. (231-759-8565) on Friday, July 17, 2015 from 4 – 7 PM and an hour prior to services. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials in Susan’s name can be made to either the Muskegon Rescue Mission or funeral expenses for the family.
