Susan M. Lathrop's Obituary
Susan Marie Lathrop, age 75, passed away Monday, September 5, 2022. She was born October 1, 1946 in Muskegon to Gordon and Marcella (Meisch) Smith. Susan was a 1964 graduate of Muskegon Heights High School and went on to graduate from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s in Social Work. She had worked at Catholic Social Services as well as Community Mental Health for 22 years prior to her retirement in 2006. Susan was a 33 year former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and most recently First Lutheran Church. Over the years she had been on church council, the Altar Guild, taught Sunday School, was a trainer for Stephen’s Ministries, was the past president of the Women’s Group, and had been a past member of the Synodical Board. Susan also taught a “Powerful Parenting” class through Love INC for 2 years, was past PTA president for 13 years for Oakridge Schools, was on the Michigan PTA Board for 6 years, and was also on the International Board for ACTA for 20 years. She enjoyed swimming at the YMCA, belonged to the Red Hat Society, crocheting and knitting, and making prayer shawls for church. She was also known as an incredible cook. But most importantly, she loved spending time with her family, whether that was camping, birthdays, or family get-togethers. SURVIVORS include 4 children: Laura (Todd) Holwerda of Muskegon, Darlene (Stephen) Golden of Twin Lake, Walter Lathrop of Ottawa, OH, Marcie (Richard) Barber of Galesburg, MI; daughter-in-law, Kris Lathrop of Columbus Grove, OH; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Carol (Joe) Millett of Bailey, MI; brother, Michael Smith of Muskegon; 2 sisters-in-law: Ida Smith and Dolly Strong; and many nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Peggy Gorajec; brothers: Douglas and Jack Smith. SERVICES for Susan will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 12, 2022 at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Bill Uetricht officiating. VISITATION with the family will be from 1-5 PM Sunday, September 11, 2022 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 (231) 798-1100 and one hour prior to the service at the church. MEMORIALS to First Lutheran Church or Every Woman’s Place will be appreciated.
