Susan Beth Maxwell's Obituary
Susan Beth Maxwell, age 74, of Spring Lake passed away Monday, August 7, 2023, at her daughter’s home. She was born April 29, 1949, in Grand Rapids, MI to Leslie and Rosemary (Edgar) Mull.
Susan was the director of the American Cancer Society for fifteen years, retiring in 2009. She was a large contributor to American Cancer Society and Cancer Research and loved to volunteer, coordinate, and organize. Susan was a twenty-year breast cancer survivor. You could always find her with a feather boa. Her motto was “I’m going to wear out, instead of rust out” and proof of that is two weeks ago she went to southern Indiana with family to do elephant washing. Susan was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Spring Lake, in choirs, Hark Up, Mother Singers, Four Pointes, and West Michigan Lutheran Chorale. She was also a member of the Furrin Group (foreign sportscar group).
She is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Sherri (Scott Houtman) Rozema and Laura Maclam; grandchildren: Jennifer Thomas, Renee (Cody Baur), Bethany Rozema “In Heaven”, Sarren (Angel Florez) Rozema, Jared Maclam, Garrett Maclam, Kaitie Maclam and Amanda Maclam; great-grandchildren: Sydney, McKenzee, Rylee, Layla, Camryn, Phoenix, Raelynn, Paxton, and Noah; her sister, Christine Mull; her brother, Allan (Patricia) Mull. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jim Mull.
The funeral for Susan will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2023, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Friends may meet the family from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 9, at The Spring Lake Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 213 E. Savidge St., Spring Lake, MI 49456.
