Susan M. Schmitt's Obituary
Susan Marie Schmitt, age 73, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her devoted husband and two loving daughters on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 due to complications of lung cancer. She was born on July 29, 1948 in Queens, New York to Harold and Evelyn (Jungk) Bach. Even though she was born in New York, Sue lived in many different cities throughout of her life. She attended Catholic schools and graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central in 1966. Sue participated in the Miss Muskegon pageant in 1967 and won the Miss Congeniality award. She went to Muskegon Community College and graduated in 1968 with an LPN degree. On June 29, 1968, she married her soul mate, Jerome Schmitt. Sue was best known for the love she had for her husband, daughters, grandchildren, family, and friends. She was a devoted grandma to her grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them and attend their school events. She was an accomplished seamstress and was known for the beautiful garments and crafts she made for others. Sue was an amazing cook and was always trying new recipes on her family. She spoiled her family with many home cooked meals. She had a great sense of humor. She was also a member of the Schmitt bunco group for over 50 years, a member of the Red Hat Association, and was a member of Prince of Peace’s church circle. Sue was raised in the Catholic Church and was very spiritual. She attended Prince of Peace Catholic Church since its beginning days in 1976. She said the best thing that could have happened to her was getting cancer because it drew her closer to Jesus. She regularly read the devotional Jesus Calling with her daughters which gave her the courage and determination to fight cancer as long as she did. A special thanks goes out to everyone who cared for our mom. Dr. Alguire was her oncologist who kept her with us as long as she could. Dr. Leskey was her family doctor who went above and beyond to care for her complex medical care. Her nurse, Char, and nurse’s aide, Tracy, who helped us care for her to the end. And a huge thanks to everyone who sent cards, flowers, and called to see how she was doing. All these things helped to keep her motivated to fight cancer. Sue is survived by her husband, Jerome Schmitt of 52 years. She is also survived by her two daughters, Janet (Brad) Brushman and Julie Schmitt, both from Muskegon; her grandchildren, Hannah Brushman, Bradley Brushman, and Jenna Brushman of Muskegon; brother, Charles (Margaret) Bach of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister, Elaine (Stan) Wever of Arcadia, MI; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many devoted and close friends. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Colin Brushman; and many brothers and sisters-in-law. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11AM, Tuesday, May 25 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church (1110 Dykstra Rd., 49445). Visitation with the family will be 2-5PM, Sunday, May 23 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444, and one hour prior to the service, from 10-11AM at church.
