Jimmy, our brother, and his lovely wife, Soo, along with their children, Molly, Finn and Jasper, always enjoyed spending time with Michelle – wherever the location. Michelle, with her kind spirit and willingness to try new things, visited them in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and Indiana. They were fortunate to have shared a few firsts with her including Michelle’s first kayaking trip on the Charles River, Michelle’s first time walking the Freedom Trail, as well as Michelle’s first trip to Martha’s Vineyard on a ferry. Her enthusiasm for each new experience was evident in the number of pictures that she took…numbering in the hundreds. Jimmy and Soo’s biggest regret is that their kids will not grow up with more memories of their Auntie Michelle. Molly, Finn and Jasper could have experienced, first-hand, their Auntie Michelle’s passion for the Texas Longhorns (hook-um horns) and breaking the gender stereotype by showing them that sports aren’t just for boys.
Morgan memories
Michelle and I had many adventures together – from spending a weekend with me at college, to going on a family ski trip and playing video games with Morgan – her nephew and my son, from spending endless time with her in Austin when she lived there to spending weekends growing up with Aunt Lorraine drinking frozen banana shakes and dancing to Survivor’s, Eye of the Tiger song – a song Aunt Lorraine really liked along with Cyndi Lauper’s songs, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “True Colors,” from more recently, meeting her in Chicago, when I had a business trip to meeting her in San Diego a couple of years ago, when we both were there for work, we enjoyed spending time together. She was also there when my son, Morgan, was born.
Speaking of entertainment, Michelle, loved music from Madonna and Whitney Houston and she also loved country & western dancing (yes, we were 80s kids!). She was also an incredible sports fan, loved watching investigative TV shows and was a major TV binge show watcher (something we both shared). Recently, she was binge watching all seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. Now that is something! We also both enjoyed watching the Bachelor/Bachelorette shows and very recently, were both watching the Super All-Star Season of Survivor.
For Michelle’s biological mom’s family, I want to thank them for all their love and support. Throughout the years, they have not just been a family to Michelle, but to us. We remember all the Zapp family get togethers with Michelle’s grandparents, Hugo and Katherine to then having the get togethers and Christmases with Bob and Francis Mosher, Michelle’s Uncle and Aunt and their awesome family. We remember Michelle’s Aunt Kate and all her historical stories on Houston. Kathy Koch, Michelle’s cousin, recalled that Michelle could have been a body double for Uma Thurmond. I thought the same. She thought of her as a timeless, mystical, fragile beauty. You all not only embraced Michelle, but us, too. There is no doubt that Michelle knew how much you loved her.
For all of the rest of our family, to those still with us, and those who have passed on like our Grandma and Grandpa Horn, we thank you so much for all the love and adoration you gave Michelle. We have fond memories of spending time with Grandpa and Grandma Horn in Onalaska, Texas.
