Sylvia Grace (McCarry) Hoagland's Obituary
Mrs. Sylvia Grace (McCarry) Hoagland, age 83, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 6, 1928 in Lake Ann, MI to John and Hazel (Wilson) McCarry and lived in the Muskegon area most of her life. She married Homer R. Hoagland, Sr. on December 24, 1946 in Beulah, MI and he survives her. Prior to retirement in 1993, she worked over 30 years for Spectra Products Corporation where she was a machinist. Sylvia was the eldest of 9 children which played a major factor in her becoming a life-long caregiver. She also enjoyed camping and playing card games, but especially enjoyed the times she spent with her children and grandchildren around the many campfires they would have. She was a great cook and most of her meals were home-made from scratch. Sylvia was the glue that bonded her family together and she will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Along with her husband of 64 years, Homer, she is also survived by 5 children, Sylvia VanderVelde, Homer (Geraldine) Hoagland, Marvin (Carmen) Hoagland, Garry (Cindy) Hoagland; Bob Hoagland; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Francis, Steven and Norman McCarry; 4 sisters, Lula, Rosie, Helen and Gloria. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Art VanderVelde; great granddaughter, Emily Jayne VanderVelde; her parents, and 1 brother, Johnny McCarry. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 1:00 PM Monday, November 14, 2011 at The Sytsema Chapel, 737 Apple Avenue, (231) 726-5210 with Pastor Karen Biggerstaff officiating. VISITATION will be held 4-7 PM Sunday and 12-1 PM Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy VNS & Hospice, Inc.
