Thomas R. Cunningham's Obituary
Thomas R. “Tom/Tommy” Cunningham, age 51, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021 from Covid-19. He was born on December 1, 1969, to Thomas Cunningham and M. Diane (Mikol) Cunningham in Muskegon. On March 16, 1996, he married the former Karen Wessels and together they spent 25 wonderful years. Tom had a love for anything with a motor (either fixing or riding). On a day off you could find him working on one of his many projects or watching his kids play sports. At home his neighbors fondly referred to him as “The Mayor” because of his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone and everyone. Tom could always lighten the mood with his bright smile, infectious laughter and sarcastic banter. He was the life of every party. Tom had a job he loved and although it often required him to be away, he would do anything he could to avoid missing any activities with his sons. His love for his family and friends was unsurpassed. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Karen Cunningham; sons, Thomas Jaden “TJ” Cunningham, Gavin Michael Cunningham; father, Thomas Cunningham; mother, M. Diane Cunningham; sister, Cathleen (Gaurav Issar) Cunningham; father-in-law, Gene Wessels; brother-in-law, Michael (Betsy) Wessels; former sister-in-law, Brenda Wessels; nieces and nephews, Liam Issar, Julian Issar, Mira Issar, Elizabeth Wessels, Zakary Wessels, Makenzie Wessels; step niece and nephew, Megan Snoeyink and Mason Snoeyink. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Margaret Wessels. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the nursing staff and medical team at Mercy Hospital for the care Tom received. An outdoor celebration of Tom’s life will take place on Saturday, May 29, 2021 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 49444. There will be no formal service. Friends and family are invited to stop by to share memories and laughter with the family.
