Thomas Robert Fongers' Obituary
Thomas Robert Fongers, age 65, passed away on December 23, 2020 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Thom was born in Muskegon on December 6, 1955 to Robert and Donna Fongers. Thom was a graduate of Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance. Thom spent time working as a credit manager at Brunswick and later transitioned to a train conductor for CSX. He ended his career working for Wesco’s Bakery and Deli Division. Thom was an avid skater and loved the game of hockey. He was a big fan of the Muskegon Mohawks and served a few seasons as their mascot “Big Mo.” Thom spent years as a softball umpire and football official from youth all the way up to the high school level. Thom was an active member of the Vikings Linne Lodge #57 serving multiple roles while enjoying time with the members there. Thom had an infectious outgoing personality and often viewed himself as the “life of the party.” Thom could also be seen driving through the streets of Muskegon while listening to his classic rock and roll. Thom was a regular attendee of Bridge Bible Church in Muskegon and participated in a men’s bible study. Thom is survived by his wife of 39 years Mary Beth Lauretti-Fongers; two children Bryan Fongers (Katie Matlock) and Andrea (Jeff) Wilkie; two grandchildren Skylar and Blakely Wilkie; mother-in-law Barbara Lauretti; siblings Sue (Jim) Secord, Mary (Jim) Dobb, Mike Fongers, and Scott (Lynn) Fongers; three sisters-in-law Laurie (Frank) Wanderski, Jane (Tad) Summerfield, and Amy (Joe) McNarland; and his dog Cubbie. Thom is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Thom was preceded in death by his parents, sister Nancy Fongers, father-in-law Dr. Lawrence Lauretti, and his grandparents. Thom was immensely loved and will be greatly missed. A Funeral Service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church (2929 McCracken St.) with Pastor Eric Stratton, officiating. Public Visitation observing social distancing will also be held at St. Francis Catholic Church Church 5-8 PM Tuesday. Memorial Contributions may be directed to Bridge Bible Church or Bridge to Life Ministries.
