Thomas J. Proksa's Obituary
Thomas J. Proksa, age 88, met his Heavenly Father on Thursday, August 17, 2023. He was born on February 6, 1935, to John and Christine (Skok) Proksa in Muskegon, MI. He graduated from Muskegon Heights High School class of 1954. It was there he met the love of his life, Betty. After graduation, Tom proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict for four years on the USS William R. Rush. Upon returning, he married his high school sweetheart who patiently waited for him on May 21, 1960, in Muskegon. Together they shared 62 years of love and created many cherished memories. They welcomed two children together, Cynthia and Thomas. Tom was a dedicated employee of the United States Postal Service serving more then 30 years before retiring in 1991. He was a lifelong and active member serving on the church council and as an usher throughout the years at Dr. Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church. A foundation his Slovakian parents helped build upon arriving from “the old country.” Tom was proud of his heritage and appreciated the traditions, foods and baked goods that were passed down for generations. He enjoyed reading, history, and had an immersed interest in the Civil War. Throughout the years while he vacationed with his family, he enjoyed visiting several Civil War battlegrounds. Tom also loved taking rides to Lake Michigan watching the boats and ships passing through the channel. These were some of the brightest spots in Tom’s days, cherishing a tradition he started with his family. Most importantly, Tom will be remembered for his kindness and unconditional love for his family. He was adored by all his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He always supported them in all their activities and achievements. He was most happy to be spending time with his family and will be sadly missed beyond words. He is survived by his two children, Cynthia McCarl and Thomas E. Proksa; seven grandchildren, Samantha McCarl, Cameron McCarl, Jessica McCarl, Zachary Proksa, Michael Proksa, Andrew Proksa and Adelle Proksa; great-grandchild, Rowan Owczarzak; brothers-in-law, James (Carol) Wagenmaker, Harvey (Judy) Wagenmaker and Louis Wagenmaker; sister-in-law, Kay (Norm) Beebe; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Christine) Proksa; wife, Betty Proksa; brother, John Proksa; and in-laws, Edward (Jeanette) Wagenmaker. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Dr. Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1860 E. Hile Rd, Muskegon, MI 49444. Visitation with the family will be one-hour prior at church. Memorial contributions in Tom’s honor can be directed to Dr. Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church. Arrangements entrusted to The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 49444. Share memories with the family at www.sytsemafh.com.
