Thomas E. Stone MD's Obituary
Thomas E. Stone, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025. Tom was born on April 2, 1935 in St. Johns, MI to Frank and Mary (Trierweiler) Stone and after high school there, he earned his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University and then attended medical school at University of Michigan, earning his MD in 1961. Shortly after medical school, he met the former Nanci Blackerby and they married in 1962. Tom and Nanci moved to San Diego, CA where Tom served 2 years in the Navy as Medical Officer on the USS Estes. After completion of his naval tour, he did a residency in Urology at Wayne County General and then moved to Muskegon where he helped establish West Shore Urology and practiced there for close to 30 years before retiring in 1995. Tom was active in the Muskegon County Medical Society, MDPAC, Michigan State Medical Society, and the AMA. He was a member of the staff at Mercy and Hackley Hospitals and after service on the Hackley Board of Trustees, he became Chairman of the Board where he served in that capacity for several years. Tom enjoyed traveling with friends and family, golf, skiing, and family get-togethers. In his early retirement, he and Nanci kept active with Red Cross Hurricane Relief and medical mission trips to Ukraine. Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nanci; his children, Kevin (Therese) Stone, MD of Norton Shores, Lynn (Rod) Parker of Salt Lake City, UT, Todd (Tamara) Stone of Denver, CO, and Kyle (Marie) Stone of Kennesaw, GA; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John (Genie) Stone; sister, Ann Hoyt; sister-in-law, Linda Vaughan; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 2929 McCracken Street, Norton Shores, MI 49441, with the Rev. Msgr. R. Louis Stasker presiding. Visitation will be held 5-7 PM Tuesday at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444 and one hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday at the church. Entombment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Community Foundation for Muskegon County or the Harbor Hospice Foundation.
