Thomas C. "Skip" Vermilya, Jr.'s Obituary
Thomas C. “Skip” Vermilya, Jr., age 85, passed away Monday morning at Mercy Hospital following a long illness. He was born on May 14, 1926, in Hawkeye, Iowa the fourth of five children to Thomas C. Sr. and Anna E. (Held) Vermilya. The family moved to Muskegon when Skip was an infant and he attended Muskegon Heights Schools. Skip was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 3195 where he served as past commander, was past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, District 12 and member of the American Legion. Skip was current commander of the Muskegon County Council Honor Guard, honoring the service of countless veterans. Mr. Vermilya was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and was employed at Teledyne-Continental for 30 plus years, retiring in 1988. On February 28, 1946 he married the former Mary “Sue” Tanner and she survives along with: their two daughters, Marilyn (Rob) Orlos of Columbus, OH and Judy (Steve) Bringedahl of Keller, TX; five grandchildren, Mary, Jennifer, Becky, Sarah & Tim; and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at: Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1215 Apple Ave, 11:00 A.M., Friday, Rev. Robert Conradt officiating with Military Rites under the Muskegon County Council of Veterans and the Michigan Army National Guard. Visitation: one hour prior. Memorial Contributions: Our Redeemer Lutheran or Muskegon County Council of Veterans Honor Guard.
