Thomas "Tom" Harry Morton's Obituary
Mr. Thomas “Tom” H. Morton, age 84, passed away at Mercy VNS Hospice House, Saturday, October 29, 2011 following a brief illness. He was born in Muskegon on January 1, 1927 to Matthew and Marie (Robinson) Morton and was a 1945 graduate of Muskegon Heights H.S. Tom served his country in the United States Navy during WWII, and graduated from Albion College with a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting. Tom was employed as an accountant for Morton Manufacturing, Maihoffer, Moore and DeLong Accountants, Camshaft Specialties, Erickson Trucking, and Burdick & Jackson. He retired in 1989. Tom was an active member of First Congregational Church where he offered his accounting expertise providing audits for many years. He was also a member of Mohave United Methodist Church in Bullhead City, AZ, where he split his time between Muskegon. He was a member of the National Association of Accountants and was co-chair of his class reunions. Tom will be remembered for his accounting and organizational skills. He enjoyed traveling and even visited all 50 states in the U.S. He had been on 17 cruises. Tom was a sports enthusiast and followed the Detroit Tigers Baseball Team. He also enjoyed attending the sporting events of his grandchildren. Recently, Tom found enjoyment in visiting casinos to pass his time. Family was always his first priority and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Tom married the former, Catherine A. Troup in Muskegon on November 17, 1967 and she preceded him in death on September 2, 2010. He is SURVIVED by 4 children: Sue (Kirk) Gorbach, Tom (Patty) Morton, Deborah (Scott VanDonkelaar) Smith, Pam (David) Appel; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; his twin brother, James (Wilma) Morton; 1 brother-in-law, Floyd Elmore. He was also preceded in death by his former spouse, Joyce Forcier; his parents; and 1 sister, Donna Holmstrom. FUNERAL SERVICES will be celebrated 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at First Congregational Church (1201 Jefferson St.) with the Rev. Timothy D. VanderHaar officiating. INTERMENT will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service, 10-11 AM Wednesday at the church.
