Uno M. Maki's Obituary
Mr. Uno M. Maki, age 86, died Wednesday June 17th, 2015, with his family by his side in Muskegon, Michigan. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Fruitland Evangelical Covenant Church (4283 Weber Rd., Whitehall, MI) with Pastor Carl Franzon officiating. Visitation with the family will be 1 hour prior to the service, from 10-11 AM at church. Uno was born on June 22, 1928 in Karijoki, Finland to Urho Matias Maki and Meimi Johanna Maki (Perala). The family moved to the United States in November 1928 and settled in Kaleva, Michigan later moving to Muskegon, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Franklin Maki, and sisters, Susan Maki, Helen Glore and Eleanor Payne. Uno married the love of his life, LaWilda J. Esh, May 8, 1951. They were married for 64 years. Upon retirement, they spent many happy winters traveling from sea to shining sea with their camper, throughout the United States. Uno served, with honors, in the 28th Infantry Division of the US Army from 1950-1952. He was a veteran of the Korean War and earned the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Don Rea Post for 40 years, a regular member of Habitat for Humanity, and member of the Finnish American Society. Uno retired from Anaconda Wire in 1981 and Herman Miller in 1988. He loved fishing, woodworking, traveling and the Detroit Tigers. He was an active member of Fruitland Evangelical Covenant Church in Whitehall, Michigan where he served as a Deacon, an Elder, a member of the maintenance and building committee, and helped organize the Food Pantry. Uno is survived by LaWilda his loving wife, his two sons, Jeffrey Maki (Christine) and Greggory Maki (Virginia), three daughters, Sheryl Yourshaw, Brenda Maki, Kathy Hayes (Jackie); 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Maki (Shirley); sisters, Joan Langler, Eileen German (Terry) and Shirley Linsley (Dave). Needless to say, Uno Maki will be deeply missed by one and all. Donations in his memory may be sent to Fruitland Evangelical Covenant Church Building Fund or Habitat for Humanity (Whitehall Chapter).
