Vern was my friend and mentor for our entire time together at NSPD. As a patrol officer Vern taught me there was more to being a cop than enforcing the law. He taught me to see people as people who had done something wrong, not to see them as what they had done. As a Sergeant the taught me leadership skills and not to forget that I was once a patrol officer. After I was promoted to Lt. I always sought out Vern's advise in those all to often sticky situations. The only thing he could not teach me, through no lack of effort on his part, was how to play a decent game of golf. We spent many hours at the Fruitport Country club after 3rd shift enjoying the game. The world is a better place because of Vern, and a little less because he is gone. Semper Fi my friend. Dr. David Burlingame (Lt. Ret, NSPD).
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

First meeting Vern at NSPD as a rookie, it was hard to judge this small statured guy with a gruff voice, but as the time went on, it was evident this was a person who had a big heart and a friend forever. It was an honor and pleasure to work with Vern and under his command. A lot of good times, some not so good, a lot of laughs, but always someone you could count on backing you up and being at your side when the times were tough. A lot of great memories that will be forever. My thoughts and prayers to Joni and the family.
God speed Vern.

Vern was always the "Cop's-Cop". Gruff maybe, but you knew you could depend on him to come through, when you needed help. Good guy, on and off duty. Semper Fi/Semper Paratus. Joni, our deepest sympathies. Lt. Chuck Hagen (Ret/MUPD ) and Joann ("Grandma").
Sgt. Vern Hosko was my mentor and I will never forget him! Too many stories to write about here, but everyone should know that under that gruff exterior was a man with a gentle soul! RIP Sarge!!!!!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family

I will always remember Vern's gruff demeanor on the radio. The first time I met Vern was on the 2300-0300 shift at Central Dispatch. I was brand new and had made the mistake of sending 422 on a call in 421's area, without the blessing of the shift Sgt. A rather agitated voice came on the radio and made it clear to me, and anyone listening in Muskegon County, that I had made a major mistake. I was mortified. A short time later that same voice was heard behind me in the dispatch center, and I was sure I would soon be getting my walking papers. Instead, this gruff little man came over to me, and seeing the tears in my eyes, gave me a big hug and told me never make a decision like that without his permission again. I never did. I will treasure always my memories of Vern, and the friendship we had. We have lost one of the greats, and he will be deeply missed. God speed 429. 10-42.
Vern you will be greatly missed at the Marine Corps League
