Verna Lorraine (Lake) Harken's Obituary
Mrs. Verna Lorraine (Lake) Harken, age 98, passed away Monday, April 26, 2010, at her home. She was born June 7, 1911 in Grand Rapids, Wisconsin to Martin and Clara (Shadkowsky) Lake and lived in the Muskegon area most of her life. She was a homemaker most of her life, but had worked at Anaconda Wire and Cable for 10 years. On May 18, 1940, she married Charles Thomas Harken in Muskegon and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1988. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church where she was formerly active in the Legion of Mary and the Parish Prayer Line. SURVIVORS include 4 sons, Robert (Donna) Harken of Bay City, James (Annette) Harken of Lansing, Thomas (Sophie) Harken of Ft. Meyers Beach, FL, David (Christine) Harken of Muskegon; 1 daughter, Donna (Grant) Alm of Muskegon; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Harken; her parents; 2 brothers, John and Al; and 1 sister, Anne. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 10:00 AM Saturday, May 1, 2010 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Thomas J. Brown as celebrant. INTERMENT will take place at St. Marys Cemetery. VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Friday at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. (231) 759-8565. The Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM Friday evening at the funeral home. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the Mass, 9-10 AM Saturday at the church.
