Walter L. Kitchen's Obituary
Walter Laverne Kitchen, age 91, peacefully left this world and was welcomed into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Tuesday August 2nd, as his loving family stood at his side. Walter was born on November 2, 1930; the youngest of four children born to William A. and Calvinetta B. (Rice) Kitchen of Muskegon. Following his graduation from Muskegon High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and served his country honorably during the Korean War era. He then began working for his brother-in-law at Reliable Auto Body in Muskegon, but would later become the finance manager and co-owner of the company, in the years prior to his retirement. On November 3rd, 1950, Walter married the love of his life Pearl Baker, at a ceremony that was held in her home church, Allen Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Muskegon. Though he was raised Baptist, Walter soon became a member of the church and would serve the Lord faithfully for the next 65 years in various capacities, including the choir, the Consistory, and the Cadet program. He also served on the board of education for Muskegon Christian Elementary school, and was appointed as a church elder on three separate occasions; the last of which he served as a visiting elder while in his 80’s. Walter’s passion for the Lord and his love of people, provided him with a divine source of energy, even in his latter years. He never shied away from an opportunity to tell those around him about the goodness of the Holy Spirit, or offer them a “Today” devotional to help guide them through God’s Word. His infectious smile and soft demeanor touched everyone he met. To know Walt was to love Walt, and he will be greatly missed by all those who loved him. Surviving are his life partner of nearly 72 years, Pearl, as well as the children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and many extended family members who loved him most, and who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
A memorial service for Walter will be held on Tuesday, August 16th at 2:00 pm, at Allen Avenue Christian Reformed Church, 695 Allen Avenue, in Muskegon. It will be officiated by Pastor Stan Sturing, with a cake and coffee social to follow.
