Walter E. Smith's Obituary
Walter E. Smith, age 85, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016 at Mercy Hospital. He was born on June 26, 1930 to Chester and Bonnie (Stephens) Smith in Waynesburg, KY. Walt served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Holton American Legion. Prior to his retirement in 1993, he worked as an electrician for IBEW Union #275 and SD Warren. He spent many hours volunteering his electrical talent at the Owasippe Scout Camp in Twin Lake. Walt was an avid Tigers fan and also enjoyed reading, fishing and hunting. On June 2, 1979 he married the former, Edith “Ferne” Anderson and together they lived a happy 37 years of marriage. She survives him along with his 2 sons, Kevin (Angie) Smith and Kirk (DeeDee) Smith; 3 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; 4 step-children; Diana (James) Vice, Brian (Lisa) Peterson, Jeffrey Peterson and Carolyn (Jeff) Mitchell; 9 step-grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren; siblings, James (Karen) Smith, Mary Lou (James) Dewald, Stephen (Rhonda) Smith, Ruth Smith, Alan Smith and numerous nieces and nephews. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Ione Smith; 2 daughters, Martha Sue Barsema and Laura Jean Smith; 1 sister, 6 brothers and stepson, Steven Peterson. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 2:00pm, June 2, 2016 at First Lutheran Church (1206 Whitehall Rd) with Pastor Bill Uetricht officiating. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service at church. MEMORIALS can be directed to the Owasippe Scout Camp in Walt’s name. BURIAL will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Montague.
