William "Bill" J. Fortenbacher's Obituary
Mr. William John Fortenbacher Sr, age 86, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, October 24, 2020 in Fruitport. He was born on March 4, 1934 to Francis and Isadora “Izzy” (Barnard) Fortenbacher in Muskegon. A lifelong resident of the area, Bill joined the United States Army after graduating high school in 1952 and was Honorably Discharged in 1954. Bill married the former Valarie Robarge on January 19, 1957 in Muskegon and they were blessed with 63 wonderful years of marriage and a loving family. Bill was known to be one of the best fast-pitch softball pitchers in the state and enjoyed playing the game in the 50’s and 60’s. He was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, though he enjoyed watching all sports. Bill had a fantastic work ethic, working as a city bus driver for three years, milkman for 18 years, and owner of Ye Olde Tavern for 21 years. The years spent at Ye Olde Tavern formed many friendships and relationships that were cherished by his entire family. When Bill was not on the clock he could usually be found working in his immaculate yard entertaining Wilson and Oberon, bonding with his beloved cat Missy, playing poker and visiting with neighbors. Most importantly, Bill cherished the time spent with his two grandchildren, Derek and Kerra, and the special memories they created together will forever live on. Bill is survived by his wife, Valarie; children, Bill Fortenbacher Jr and Carol (David) Anderson; two grandchildren, Derek (Jenna) Anderson and Kerra (Derek) Bush; sister-in-law, Nancy Franczek; and brother-in-law, David (Susan) Robarge; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary “Sis” Bauer Fortenbacher. A private family burial will be held. Memorial contributions in Bill’s name may be directed to Harbor Hospice Foundation, American Cancer Society or Muscular Dystrophy Association.
