Dear Kate, I am so sorry to hear the news of Bill's passing. It was an honor and pleasure to work with Bill for so many years at K&E. I will always remember his kindness, his intelligence and, of course, his delightfully quick wit. Bill was a good man. I am especially grateful that I had the opportunity to spend a couple hours of laughter and interesting conversation with the two of you as you passed through Houston this summer. Bill's love of life, art, travel and a nice cocktail remained as I remembered them, but it was his admiration and love for you, Kate, that seemed to shine through most clearly. Please accept my and Bob's condolences to you and all the Scarbrough family. May the wonderful memories you shared console you in this difficult time.

Dear Scarbrough family: Bill was such a generous and compassionate person. A few years ago I assisted a pro bono client (who was also homeless) in getting back pay of a couple hundred dollars for some work he had done painting a floor. The client showed up at our law firm a day before the funds were wired to our account from the employer. The client was somewhat agitated. Bill called me, I gave him the story, and Bill withdrew personal funds from the ATM at Ford Field so that the client could get access to money immediately. I always thought it was so decent of Bill to see someone in distress and extend such kindness. Bill was a pleasure to work with, and I was very sorry to hear of his passing.

Bill Scarbrough. My mother informed me of your passing and it was with a heavy heart that I reflected on the fact. I think the last time that we had a chance to talk was at the back courtyard of Pekadill’s in Whitehall. It must have been in the early 1980’s. Such a long time ago. Living in Grand Rapids, I had intended to give you a call to see if we could get together upon learning that you were working for a law firm in the area. Knowledge of your employment in GR turned from weeks to months to years. Being the immortal people that we are there would always be time, right? I am truly sorry about the delay, Bill. I still remember the time that your mother drove us to a leadership conference when we were in eighth grade. Airbags were just starting to be installed in automobiles and for some reason we thought it was funny to conjecture about all of the possible ways that they could malfunction. Not sure why we thought it was funny, but I do remember clearly that we thought it was so. For some reason I still chuckle inside when I think of it even though there is no rational reason why I should. lol. I guess that is the lot of memories; they carry the full intensity of the connected emotion even if the related factual details are a bit hazy. There are a few memories from our Junior and Senior years in high school that I still think about to this day. Working together on homework for Physics class, supporting each other during Solo and Ensemble competitions, heavy philosophical discussion as well as purposeless chit chat during lunch hour, and pestering each other during rehearsals for “Guys and Dolls” at the White Lake Theater. For some reason we thought it was funny to walk up, get the other person’s attention, and then walk away without saying a word. I still cannot for the life of me remember why we thought it was funny. Must have been the carefree silliness of a teenager unfettered by responsibility. It seems almost embarrassing to recount as an adult. lol. And now at this appointed date we know with certainty how back then we could only wonder with magical curiosity how life would turn out. Good bye my friend and during eternity we shall have that get together that this mortal soul waited too long to schedule.

Kate - So sad to hear of our loss of Bill. He was very helpful to the founding of our business networking group in Grand Rapids. Further, he was more than willing to help me whether in West Michigan, Detroit or Chicago. Many found memories.....
