William Schroeder Jr. PhD's Obituary
William Schroeder Jr., PhD, age 99, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 24, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born on April 9, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, to William and Ottilie (Stone) Schroeder. In 1965, he moved to North Muskegon, where he built both his career and community. He was a proud World War II Navy veteran.
Dr. Schroeder was an alumnus of The Ohio State University and earned his doctorate in Organic Chemistry from Purdue University. He built a distinguished career in organic chemistry, beginning at The Upjohn Company and later joining Burdick & Jackson Laboratories, which he helped grow into a thriving Muskegon-based business.
A dedicated mentor and educator, Dr. Schroeder contributed to the Chemistry Department at Grand Valley State University by supporting research and development initiatives. He mentored numerous students, sharing his expertise in the synthesis of antibiotics and anti-cancer compounds and helping to shape the next generation of scientists. He published numerous research papers and held several patents, significantly contributing to the field of organic chemistry.
Later in his career, Dr. Schroeder founded Trace Analytical Laboratories, an environmental testing company based in Muskegon. He was deeply committed to environmental stewardship and played a key role in supporting the Grand Valley State University Annis Water Resources Institute, including efforts to bring the research vessel W.G. Jackson to Muskegon Lake. His dedication to environmental causes contributed to the clean air and water enjoyed throughout Michigan today.
He was also a strong advocate for entrepreneurship, serving as Committee Chair at the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and as a member of the Grand Valley State University Advisory Committee.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill was known for his innovative spirit and creativity. A self-taught furniture builder, he crafted pieces admired by many. He enjoyed inventing practical solutions—from laboratory equipment to spill-free martini glass carriers and mailbox alert systems.
An avid golfer, Bill was a longtime member of Muskegon Country Club and introduced his children to the game at an early age. His passion for golf, along with his emphasis on integrity and etiquette, left a lasting impression on his family.
He will be remembered as a role model whose life reflected kindness, curiosity, dedication, and love.
He is survived by his children, Cathy Ann Schroeder and John Alan (Joy) Schroeder; his granddaughter, Mackenzie (JJ) Gagliardi; his sister, Adele Boucher; and long-time life partner Susan Vizanko. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, William Schroeder III.
Visitation will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM at: The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey Street, Norton Shores, MI 49444.
Memorial contributions in Dr. Schroeder’s honor may be made to the Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute, Lake Michigan Center, 740 W. Shoreline Drive, Muskegon, MI 49441, in support of the W.G. Jackson Water Research Vessel.
