William E. Campbell's Obituary
William Edward Campbell, age 86, of Spring Lake passed away Thursday, January 4, 2007, at a local hospital. He was born October 21, 1920, to James and Anna (Schmeiser) Campbell in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and he married the former Donna Oliver on June 30, 1945.
Mr. Campbell graduated from Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids and from Aquinas College. He served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Field Artillery during World War II. He was employed as controller for Challenge Machinery for 29 years. A 51-year resident of Spring Lake, Mr. Campbell served his community in various capacities. He was a former Spring Lake Village Treasurer, as well as treasurer of Spring Lake Credit Union. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Legion of Grand Haven, and the Tri-Cities Supervisor’s Club. Mr. Campbell was also a lifelong Notre Dame fan, and he attended all home games in South Bend, IN, with his family. He was also an avid golfer, and he loved to walk the Village of Spring Lake.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Donna; 10 children: Karen (Frans) Jungslager of Grand Haven, Tim Campbell of Grand Haven, Catherine (Eugene) Anderson of Nunica, Tom (Shari) Campbell of Grand Haven, David (Jean) Campbell of Grand Rapids, Suzanne (Charles) Welton of Grand Haven, Bonnie (Mike) Hawes of Grand Rapids, Bill (Deb) Campbell of Grand Haven, Bob (Nancy) Campbell of Grand Haven, and Jim (Lauren) Campbell of Mattawan; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Mary Christine (Roy) Holmes on October 30, 2005.
The service for Mr. Campbell will be held Monday, January 8, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spring Lake with Rev. Leonard Sudlik officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, January 7, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Anthony Vainavicz. A private interment will take place in Spring Lake Cemetery at a later date.
