William J. Schippers' Obituary
William J. Schippers, age 80, passed away early Sunday morning August 14, 2005. He was born May 31, 1925 to William H. and Helen (Gosen) Schippers in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Bill was a World War II Veteran serving with the 81st Wildcat Infantry Division in the Philippines. He worked 43 years at Bastian Blessing Co., retiring in 1986. Mr. Schippers was a member of the Sgt. Alvin Jonker-VFW Post 2326 where he had served as the post quartermaster, and had been a member of the honor guard for many years. Bill will always be remembered for his love of the U.S. flag and extreme patriotism, and his love of life. He enjoyed big band music, hunting, air shows, and old war planes.
Survivors include his five children: Carol Verploegh, Grand Haven; William R. (Claudia) Schippers, Grand Haven; Brian (Kathi) Schippers, Grand Haven; Brenda (Russ) Swanson, Fruitport; Garry Schippers, Muskegon; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces, and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his son Larry, his parents, brother Harry, sisters Elizabeth Norman and Lorraine Dykhouse.
A funeral service for William J. Schippers will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Daniel Anderson officiating. Military Rites will be provided under the auspices of the Sgt. Alvin Jonker-VFW Post 2326. Friends may meet the family 7-9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Interment will in Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorials to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or VFW Post 2326 are appreciated.
