Winifred "Winnie" Schmitt's Obituary
Mrs. Winifred “Winnie” Schmitt, age 96, of Spring Lake passed Thursday, September 20, 2018. She was born May 15, 1922 in Ecorse, MI to Wilfred and Eva (Boston) Duguay. On June 27, 1942 she married Eugene Schmitt and he preceded her in death in June of 1974.
Winnie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and taught others how to make porcelain dolls for over 15 years. Winnie was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and her claim to fame was the hundreds of pairs of socks she made and gifted to her family and friends. Most of all she loved her family and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by five children: Carl (Carole) Schmitt of Crescent Springs, KY, Jeffrey (Suetta) Schmitt of Knoxville, TN, Daniel (Bonnie) Schmitt of Grand Haven, Leslie (Scott) Anderson of Hesperia, and Frank (Candy) Baklarz of Laguna Hills, CA; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by one sister, Grace Weber; and many, many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Anderson, and son, Paul Schmitt; two sisters, Olive Swiatek, and Isabelle Harmon; brother, John Duguay.
MEMORIAL MASS will be 10:00 AM Saturday, October 20, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spring Lake with Father David Gross officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will take place in Spring Lake Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Winnie may be given to Mary Light of Learning – St. Mary’s Catholic School or the American Cancer Society.
