Alice J. Covington (Herlein)'s Obituary
Mrs. Alice J. Covington (Herlein), “The Tree Skirt Lady,” age 66, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, July 2, 2004 in Portland, MI. She was born on October 11, 1937 to Lammert & Caroline (Spooner) Herlein, and had resided in the Muskegon area all of her life. Mrs. Covington had worked for AAA Insurance for more than 25 years, retiring in 1995. She was currently a member of Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa, MI, and enjoyed crafting, sewing, and painting, along with having a love for reading and music. Every Christmas, thousands will remember her by her Christmas tree skirts. On February 2, 1957, she married George Covington, and he survives her along with 4 children, Kenneth (Oralia) Covington of N. Muskegon, Keith (Debra) Covington of N. Muskegon, Kay (Timothy) Goodemoot of Portland, MI, and Karen (Louis) Glockzin of Jenison; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Jessie Sims; 4 brothers, Bob Herlein of Ludington, George Herlein of Romeo, MI, Fred Hoffman of Muskegon, Clifford Hoffman of Florida; 4 sisters, Betty Gyzm of Arizona, Mary Hawkins of Alabama, Nancy DeGraves of Holland, MI, Carol Postema of Fremont; and special sister-in-law, Shirley DeVrou. Mrs. Covington was preceded in death by her parents, Lambert and Caroline; step-mother, Dema Herlein; 1 brother, Roger Herlein, and grandson, Keith Covington, Jr. SERVICES will be 1 PM Wednesday at Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210 with Dr. Donald Ferris of Central United Methodist Church of Lake Odessa officiating. VISITATION with the family will be from 6-9 PM Tuesday. Burial will take place in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Memorial Contributions to Hospice of Michigan and Cystic Fibrosis will be appreciated.
