From a letter to mom dated 9.12.89
Dear Mom:
In one of my favorite songs there is a line that makes me think of you. I'd like to share it with you today, on your seventh birthday. "Did I ever tell you you're my hero? Your everything wish I could be, and I, I can fly higher than an eagle, for you are the wind beneath my wings." When I hear that line I think of how proud I am of you. You have lived with dignity and open-mindedness - even in the most difficult situations. You are truly a person to emulate.
However, since I am a person that must learn everything the HARD WAY, no matter how close I've come to crashing, you have always been there beneath my wings to keep me aloft until I can get my barrings again.
No matter how high I can fly now, I'll never forget those close calls with disaster, when at the last moment before I crashed into oblivion, you'd rush in to help me climb. Remember, the eagle cannot soar without the wind. I'm not worried though, because I know I can count on you forever.
You maybe old in years - even gone from view, but your spirit will remain present, young and free. .
I LOVE you! I'll be seeing you.
PS: Thank you for singing to us the other night ...
