When I first met Bernie, years ago, I was not surprised to learn she was a nurse because of her caring, sweet character.
The second thing that was immediately apparent was how much Daryle and Bernie loved each other. That love was cherished by these two wonderful, giving people that spent most of their lives helping and caring for, in many cases strangers that were experiencing the worst moments of their lives.
Bernie was able to be strong, compassionate and a true lifesaver in a career that takes a uncountable toll on individuals and families. The fact that her daughter, Sarah followed in the footsteps of these two angels of mercy, shows how much grace under fire was in the Gates home while Sarah was growing up.
I have no doubt there is a special place in Heaven for Bernie and others who live their lives doing the hard job of caring for others. She is in the presence of her Lord even now.
