Bernard Marion Smith's Obituary
Mr. Bernard Marion Smith passed away unexpectedly at home Saturday morning, May 14, 2011. He was born January 9, 1928 during a blizzard in a log cabin on M-20 in Norwich Twp., Newaygo County, son of Ingrid (Anderson) and Edward M. Smith. As a child he lived in rural Newaygo County and Muskegon Heights. As a teenager he worked for Shepherd Cleaners, and then left for Pasadena, California where he lived for 5 years. From there he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1949. He was stationed at Bolling AFB, Washington D.C. and Hickam AFB, Oahu, Hawaii. It was here on August 21, 1953 he married Evelyn R.L. Pyatt of Muskegon Hts. Returning to Muskegon, he worked for the City of Muskegon in the Water and Sewer Department and the Wastewater Treatment Plant for over 30 years. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing the piano. SURVIVING is Evelyn his wife of 57 years, 2 daughters, Alida Smith and Gloria Smith; 1 grandson, Jason Kuzyk; and 3 nieces. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marvel M. Alley. According to his wishes, he will be cremated. May he rest in peace. The FULL HONORARY MILITARY RITES will be 2PM Thursday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 under the auspices of Muskegon County Council of Veterans.
