Mrs. Betty J. Shafer's Obituary
Mrs. Betty J. Shafer, age 88, passed away Friday morning, October 31, 2014, on what would have been her 72nd anniversary with her late husband, Leo. She was born January 21, 1926 in Muskegon Heights, MI to Victor and Jennie (Lundstrom) Benson. Betty worked for Muskegon Piston Ring, the Muskegon YMCA, and for Muskegon Catholic Central as a cook for many years before retiring. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose #4 and the Muskegon Heights Eagles Women’s Auxiliary #2106. On October 31, 1942 she married Leo B. Shafer in Muskegon and he preceded her in death on September 26, 2004. SURVIVORS include her son: Ronald (Bonnie) Shafer of Muskegon; 2 daughters: Carol (Jerry) Wood, Marlene Leiter both of Muskegon; 6 grandchildren: Vicki (Paul) Anderson, Marty (Sarah) Shafer, Amy (Eric) Gilbert, Jodi (Jim) Luttrull, Jeff Wood, Kim (Vanessa Glover) Leiter; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law: Marge Benson and Wilma Vanderwall; several nieces and nephews; special grand dog “Pedro”; and many wonderful friends. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers: Edwin “Bob” and Carl Benson. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, November 6, 2014 at The Sytsema Chapel, 737 Apple Ave., (231) 726-5210, with the Rev. John H. Brown officiating. VISITATION with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in Egelston Twp. Cemetery. MEMORIALS to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be appreciated.
