"Gramma Kelly" - that's what everyone in the neighborhood called her. I have fond memories of one summer in particular when my best friend, "Tink" as we called her, invited me to spend two weeks at her Grandma's house by the beach. What a fun time it was. From Gramma's house, we could walk just about anywhere. It was my one and only experience when I truly believe I had sun poisoning from laying at Pere Marquette Beach for too long on those hot summer days. At night, we'd bounce tennis balls against the brick school walls and sometimes lose them on the roof. Gramma took such good care of us. I hated to leave at the end of that two weeks to go home. Hard to believe that was over 30 years ago. I'm now a grandmother myself to twins, with another one on the way. I hope to be as good a "Gramma" as "Gramma Kelly" was to all the children.

I had the chance to meet Catherine due to my involvement in researching the Bluffton Actors' Colony. This was ten years ago. What a wonderful lady. She opened her heart and shared her memories of this long gone era.

Because of her, we learned of the whereabouts of her childhood friend, Mildred Millard - the Colony's last surviving member. Many details about this chapter of the city's history would have been long lost without Catherine and Mildred's memories, experiences and kindness. I was blessed to have met both of them, and will carry their memories, spirit and zest for life with me forever.

In addition, years ago Catherine's worked to prevent a large chemical company from invading the Bluffton area. Those efforts prevented another alteration to the shoreline, and based on what occured elsewhere in the area, may have saved this West Michigan area from ecological disaster. Because of her foresight and fight, instead we have a treasured neighborhood. What a wonderful gift!
