Catherine "Kate" Slagel's Obituary
Catherine “Kate” Slagel, age 96, of Grand Haven passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at a local care facility. She was born July 28, 1912, in Chicago, IL, to Elmer and Elizabeth (Schneider) Parth. Catherine married Donald F. Slagel on April 19, 1941, in Chicago, IL, and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1999.
“Kate” worked in the kitchen at Fricano’s Pizza for over 30 years. She visited the restaurant on a weekly basis until her illness, eating pizza and visiting with co-workers. She was a former member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Grand Haven and also enjoyed baking, cooking and gardening. The highlight of her life was her grandchildren, whom she asked about almost every day. She will be greatly missed by her family.
Survivors include two sons, Donald (Melinda) Slagel of Mt. Clemens, MI, and Gerald (Linda) Slagel of Grand Haven; five grandchildren: Gerald Jr. (Korey), Benjamin (Ashley), Scott, Steven, and Christopher; one great-grandchild, Austin; a sister, Helen Buczynski of Chicago, IL; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, two sisters, Mary Hadra and Antoinette “Toni” Alton and two brothers, Steve and Elmer Parth.
A time for remembering and sharing with the family will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2009, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Catherine’s name may be made to the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation or Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
