Charles Bert Hazekamp's Obituary
Charles Bert Hazekamp, Sr., age 77, was welcomed into our Lord’s arms March 7, 2009, after a hard-fought illness. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Joyce; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Donald Semelbauer; parents, Georgia and Bert. To cherish their memories of him, he leaves behind sons, Charles, Jr. (Karen) of Stanton, David (Julie) of Fruitport, Jeffery (Gwen) of Janesville, WI, and Michael (Michelle) of Fruitport; loving sister, Janice (Ron) Umstead; brother-in-law, James (Mary Lou) Kramer, sister-in-law, Donna (Clyde) Gurzynski; many wonderful nieces, nephews, and friends; and, the special lady who brought him love and joy for 14 years, Ruth Leafers. His grandchildren will forever carry their grandpa’s love in their hearts: Dan (Holly), Stephen, David, Ben, Nick, Christina, Lauren, Catherine, Elizabeth, Zach, Michael Jr. and Tori. Two-week-old Hudson Charles will be told many great stories about his great-grandpa. Chuck had a way of making everybody he came in contact with feel welcome and comfortable in his presence. He had many, many friends who will always treasure his kindness, sense of humor, and gentleness. Chuck grew up in Muskegon, graduating from Muskegon High School, before attending Hope College. Chuck left college to join the army and serve his country overseas during the Korean War. He returned to marry his sweetheart Mary Joyce Kramer, settle in the Muskegon area, and raise four sons. He took over the family business, Hazekamp Meats, and devoted much time to community service. He was a church leader at Unity Reformed Church, and dedicated himself effortlessly to those around him. The family would like to thank Harbor Hospice and Chestnut Fields staffs for their loving care during these difficult months. VISITATION will be Thursday, March 12 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100. SERVICES will be held at Unity Reformed Church (1521 Porter Rd) on Friday, March 13 at 11AM with Pastor Kyle DeYoung officiating. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to Unity Reformed Church Mission Team or Harbor Hospice.
