Chester G. "Chet" Nienhuis' Obituary
Chester G. “Chet” Nienhuis, age 93, went to be with his Lord on Monday, November 23, 2020 at Mercy Hospital after contracting COVID-19. He was born April 17, 1927 in Muskegon to John and Margaret (Vandenberg) Nienhuis. He graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and spent 9 months aboard the LST 992. While attending Central Reformed Church in Muskegon, he met and married Fern G. Vanderlaan on September 16, 1949. After his time in the Navy, he graduated from Michigan State University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Chet went to work in his father’s business after college – Muskegon Maytag Company which changed to Seaway Appliance Center, Inc. in the 1970’s. He remained active in the business until 2013 when he transitioned to part-time. He enjoyed going to the Y’s Men’s Club which he was a member for 65 years. He also enjoyed bowling and golfing. He was a member of Forest Park Covenant Church where he enjoyed visiting the shut-ins on Sunday afternoons for many years. Survivors include his wife, Fern G. Nienhuis; 1 son, Scott (Sharon) Nienhuis; 4 grandchildren, Kristen Krogoll, Dan Nienhuis, Alecia Nienhuis, Nicole (Aaron) Stelly; 2 great-grandchildren, Angela Cuevas, Paisley Priest; and 1 step-sister, Cherie (Denny) Sturgis. He was preceded in death by his son, Randy; parents and step-mother, Donna Nienhuis; and his sister, Priscilla VanDam. Due COVID-19 restrictions and safety, there will be no funeral service at this time. Memorial Contributions may be made to Love, Inc., or the Harbor Hospice Foundation.
