Danny and I were roommates and shared a bedroom until our brother John went into the Navy. There are a lot of colorful stories related to Dan, and I will to speak of a few that had am impression on me as his only younger brother.
While living in Saugatuck in the 60’s we were probably the closest. I remember when the song “My Green Tambourine” came out. Danny just had to have a Green tambourine so he finally ordered one through the mail. It took weeks or months to get anything back then. For that entire time he and I would chase down the UPS truck to see if the package had arrived yet.
There was also the time when the woods behind our house caught fire. There was a challenge to see how big of a pile of leaves you could get burning and still stomp it out. Well, soon there were sirens and Danny came back home looking like a cartoon character that just had a bomb explode. He had singed eyebrows and hair and soot all over his face. That same face would be repeated just a few years later with a gun powder experiment.
We spent a lot of time at a tree we called “Mother Nature” for it was the largest tree in the woods. We had elaborate tree forts in Saugatuck and Grand Haven. Dan rigged up a zip line in the back yard in Grand Haven and we had a blast with that.
The family moved back to Grand Haven from Saugatuck in the summer of 1969. While attending school I would often here “Are you Dan Peel’s brother?”, or “You aren’t Dan Peel’s brother, you two are so different!”
When I went to classes in school and had the same teacher Dan had 2 years prior, it was always interesting. The teacher would do roll call and get to my name. They would say with stern beady eyes “Ron Peel? Dan Peel’s brother?” and promptly put a check mark by my name.
Different we were. Dan was very intelligent and probably a poster child for a misunderstood gifted kids. He would often frustrate adults because he could easily out wit them. He was very frustrated in school and completely bored. There would be the occasional teacher that could relate to him, but this curious, gifted, non-conforming boy needed a different environment and mentors.
When Dan became a dad, he was so proud. He was so excited at the birth of Travis, Zachary, and Riley. He loved his boys and was always so proud of them.
In summary, I have a few words that describe Dan and I am sure I am missing many. He meant so many things to so many people I don’t even know, but I can only imagine that these few words would capture most of it.
Intelligent, Wild, Witty, Naughty, Curious, Kind, Caring, Loving, Funny, Friend, and Dad.
The Hymn of Promise.
In the bulb there is a flower
In the seed and apple tree
In cocoons a hidden promise
Butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
There’s a spring that waits to be
Unrevealed until its season
Something God alone can see.
God had a plan for Danny.##imported-begin##Ron Peel##imported-end##
