David Snelling's Obituary
David Snelling, 69 years old, left us suddenly and peacefully April 9, 2013. He leaves behind a huge void in the world. Those who knew and loved him will remember his quick wit, sharp intellect and compassion. David was born September 26, 1943 to Elroy A. and Madeleine L. (Wachter) Snelling in Corpus Christi, TX. He was raised in the Chicago metro area, while his adult life was spent in the Kalamazoo and Muskegon areas. David earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University and his master’s degree from Western Michigan University. He enjoyed his career of over 30 years as a psychologist for the State of Michigan and retired in 2009. David's special brand of humor and love were second to none and irreplaceable. He was a master at many things including photography, trivia, joke telling, sarcastic banter, and nearly any endeavor he put his mind to. A truly wonderful individual who was always ready to help those in need; he shared much wisdom and advice in his life. His unique ability to bring joy and laughter to even terrible times is glaringly absent as we suffer his loss. David’s sparkle will live forever in the hearts of his wife, daughter, sisters, brother, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, stepchildren and many friends who are devastated by the void left in his passing.
His niece Jo wrote this tribute: Sometimes you get lucky enough to know people who carry with them a bit of magic. People who move differently in the world, who have a sense of play, who change the textures that surround them with their spirit. Today my Uncle D left us, and my heart is heavy. But I know that he's out there now reminding me to love with all I've got, to laugh and find the absurdities in life, to do well by others and to enjoy a bit of decadence as much as possible.
He is sadly missed by his wife, Stella Dial; his daughter Heather (Thomas) Holmer; granddaughter, Madison Holmer; sister, Madeleine (James) Borth; nieces: Alisha Borth, Rachael (Jared) Keuhl; nephew: James (Laura Brown) Borth; brother, Phillip (Linda Harper) Snelling; nieces: Halley & Zoe; sister, Roberta (Krebs) Snelling, Joanna (James) Krebs Daggett & Katherine (Guy) Natanel; Step Children: Rick (Michelle) Mikkelson, Scott (Vicki Anderson) Mikkelson, Michelle (Bill) Morse. He was preceded in death by his parents.
David requested a celebration (party) in lieu of funeral services. Plans will be shared on Facebook as they develop. Those who wish are encouraged to donate to the charity of their own choosing in his name.
