The first time I can recall seeing Dezeree Thomas was on the playground of Reeths-Puffer Elementary. And if my misty memory is as accurate as that day was real then she was almost certainly wearing a cowboy hat over her curly shoulder length hair, a white ruffled blouse with a bluejeaned skirt that came to just above her knees, and to complete the ensemble she had the courage to wear a pair of oversized brown leather cowboy boots.
I remember that Me and a lot of others were playing soccer that day, and despite the fresh mud on the field she joined in and played soccer in those cowboy boots. She was unlike anyone I had ever seen. She seemed exotic and out of place, like the way a Bengal tiger might look casually strolling through a shopping mall full of people. I remember that I instantly had a crush on her and I began following her around incessantly, although she didn’t seem to mind and I think we both actually enjoyed each other’s company. She was my first friend who was a girl.
