Don retired as a history teacher from Spring Lake Public Schools, and was a former member of First Baptist Church of Spring Lake. He had a great passion for the Gideons and prison ministries, traveling all over the state to minister to prisoners. He had a love for sports, which included watching grandkids, coaching, and the University of Michigan. Don had served as the AWANA devotional leader and on the Christian Haven Board. He had been a probation officer in Grand Haven and Holland. He served as Sunday School Superintendent and on the Christian Education Committee at First Baptist Church. Don grew up next to the Jackson Street Train Station in Grand Haven and had a love of trains all of his life. Don biked from Spring Lake to Port Huron, up to the Mackinaw Bridge, and enjoyed being outside working on his lawn. Most of all Don loved his family. Don will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him and will always be remembered for his giving spirit, his passion for service, and his unwavering faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
On July 16, 1960, Don married Norma Jean Zimmerman and she preceded him in death on March 6, 1999. On November 15, 2002 Don married Beth Longstreet and she survives him along with his 3 children, Elizabeth (Mike) Lyyski, Polly Jansen (Chris Verry) and Jason (Kaitlin) Boyink; 3 step-children: Rebecca (Geoff) Dominczak, Jim (Melissa) Aardema and Sara (Brian) Meiste; and 13 grandchildren.
