Donald P. Potter's Obituary
Donald P. Potter, age 77, of Spring Lake left us far too quickly on Saturday, May 31, 2025. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan on January 22, 1948, to Floyd and Madra (Spangler) Potter. Don was known for his quick wit, caring attitude, and dedication to family and friends.
Don graduated from Muskegon High School in 1966. He joined the U.S. Army after high school and served two tours of duty in Vietnam (1969-70), earning a Bronze Star. Upon his return, Don attended Muskegon Community College and subsequently earned his bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Michigan State University, and a master’s degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Michigan. Don maintained a lifelong allegiance to the Muskegon Big Reds, as well as to Michigan State University basketball and University of Michigan football.
His distinguished career commenced at the Michigan State Medical Society in Lansing, Michigan and subsequently encompassed six years of dedicated service at the Michigan Health and Hospital Association. In 1983 he became President of the Southeast Michigan Health and Hospital Council in Southfield, Michigan where his leadership and support of hospitals and health systems was committed to achieving better care for individuals and improving health status for populations.
Upon Linda’s retirement the couple returned to West Michigan to enjoy family and friends, the beauty of the area and their cottage in Grand Haven on Lake Michigan.
Don was deeply committed to fostering community and supporting causes close to his heart. He served on the Board of the Muskegon YMCA, the Camp Pendalouan Board and was a supporter of the Muskegon Big Red Athletic Foundation. He recently established the Don & Linda Potter Scholarship Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County for students with interests in pursuing careers in healthcare and education. Don also supported the Lakeshore Museum Center (LMC), where Linda volunteered, and included a planned gift for LMC in their will.
Don's legacy is one of kindness, strength, and devotion. He lived life with an open heart, forging bonds with everyone he encountered and leaving indelible impressions on those fortunate enough to know him. His love for his family and Linda (and dog Winston) was unmatched, as was his commitment to uplifting the community around him. Those who knew Don will always remember his insightful advice, his steadfast support, and his ability to bring light into any room. May his light live on eternally in the hearts of the many close friends and loved ones he leaves behind.
He is survived by his spouse of 50 years, Linda (Lutes); in-laws, Cathy and Mike Norkus; niece, Kristen (Brett) Bordewyk; nephew, Chris (Gabe) Norkus; and their children: Nixon and Easton Bordewyk, Cruz and Marlee Norkus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Madra, and his brother, Charles Potter.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM Friday, June 6, 2025 at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Don may be given to YMCA Camp Pendalouan, or the Muskegon Big Red Athletic Foundation.
